Whether during a trip or in the comfort of your home, to keep a Merino wool garment intact and last for a long time, 3 fundamental steps are necessary, and we will summarize them below.

Merino wool fiber, in fact, is a natural and delicate material that undergoes the effects of the treatments and which, if done incorrectly, inevitably bring visible consequences on the garment.

Before washing any product, it is essential to always read the label and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Follow the simple rules that apply to wool and we summarized in this article by creating a real guide to read when needed.

Step 1 first of all involves washing. There are two ways in which a wool garment can be washed: by hand or in the washing machine

Once the washing is finished, the garments must be immediately removed from the drum to avoid felting that can happen if they remain wet on the bottom of the washing machine.

Hand Washing

The first option is the oldest and safest solution, as it allows you to treat the fabric gently and not stress the fiber. However, even in this case, specific measures are needed.

The water temperature must be kept constant and can be cold or lukewarm, but never hot as it could felt the fiber.

Concerning the soap, you can pre-treat the area that has any stains with Marseille soap and then immerse the garment in a basin or sink containing warm water and mild soap for wool or a few flakes of Marseille soap.

At this point, just lather the garment by moving it gently in the water, without twisting or squeezing it, and then change the water in order to rinse everything and eliminate the soap residue that otherwise helps to harden the fiber.

After rinsing, the garment will be pressed gently between two wipes in order to eliminate the excess of water without squeezing or twisting it.

This type of washing is particularly suitable for those who bring their Rewoolution garments with them while traveling, as it is easily applicable using a basin and simple Marseille soap

Machine Washing

The second washing method, on the other hand, consists in using the washing machine. Also in this case it is important to always check the label of the garment, as wool, to be washed in the washing machine, must have certain characteristics that allow it not to shrink or felt during mechanical washing.

If it is allowed, the garments must be inserted inside out in order to prevent any writings or logos from being damaged by friction. Furthermore, it is mandatory to use the special cycle for wool garments or delicate garments, which must be set at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees and without spinning or reducing it to a minimum, avoiding the use of softeners and bleaches and using only detergent made for delicate fabrics.

Once the washing is finished, the garments must be immediately removed from the drum to avoid felting that can happen if they remain wet on the bottom of the washing machine.

Drying

For drying, Rewoolution garments cannot be placed in the dryer, but, if possible, they should be laid horizontally on a drying rack in order to prevent excessive stress on the fiber, avoiding direct exposure to the sun or sources of excessive heat such as radiators or stoves.

As for ironing, however, it is important to iron the wool at low temperatures and possibly using steam to revive the fiber. Instead, it should be avoided to superimpose the hot iron on logos or writings to prevent them from being damaged.

Finally, to keep them at their best, place them in the drawers by adding a fabric bag containing dried lavender or a stick soaked in lavender, thyme or cedar essential oil. With this natural method you will avoid the formation of the holes typically associated with moths and the garments will have a fantastic scent.

Also, don’t forget that Merino wool fabrics are naturally breathable and thermoregulating and prevent the formation of unpleasant odors. This therefore allows to reduce the number of washes of garments made with this material, impacting less and less on the environment, as well as not dispersing microplastics during washing unlike polyester garments

When the snow returns to cover the mountains, the first skialp enthusiasts inevitably return to the slopes and trails. The thrill of a new season, however, should not make us forget the importance of good equipment: skialp is a high-intensity sport, with moments of maximum effort mixed with softer phases of relaxation. For this reason, it is essential to be prepared and to organize your backpack and clothing to be ready for all weather and fatigue conditions.

Once you have put on the first layer, you move on to the intermediate and outer layers, which are assigned with the task of insulating from the cold and protecting from wind and humidity: the structure of many of the intermediate garments is made to preserve the heat inside the body, without sacrificing breathability, while the outer shell must be light and waterproof. The outer shell must be light and waterproof. All you need to do now is choose a softshell garment and a waterproof jacket to be able to tackle the climb without any problems. Extra tip: a jacket could be useful to wear on the descent or on arrival during a well-deserved stop at the refuge.

The same applies to legs, but there must be a greater focus on mobility: the underwear in the base layer must be close-fitting and covering, and the other two upper layers must not only provide insulation from the cold and weather, but also excellent mobility. Although mountain biking, compared to enduro and downhill, may seem softer and easier, there are many precautions to take into account, first and foremost the equipment. Let’s start with the rucksack: there are so many, aren’t there? Which one should I choose and why? First of all, we advise you to consider carefully the size of your backpack, depending on the activity you are going to do. Are you going to be outside all day? Perhaps an 18 liter is a good choice! If you’re only going on short hikes, you could also opt for something smaller or even a pouch. Let’s not forget optional features such as a water bag. From the most passionate road runners to newco-mers from the world of athletics, this discipline has conquered many people in a short time but, although this sport is similar to the clas-sic race, it is necessary to prepare and take the necessary precau-tions before jumping headlong into it.

Get a good pair of mountain running shoes, a healthy dose of energy and the desire to run in unspoiled nature and you al-ready have three of the fundamental elements to fully appreciate a day of trail running.

But let’s get more specifically because, although the fundamentals of this sport are your breath and your desire to work hard, there are many details to take into account and technical equipment that you will have to bring with you.

The impor-tant thing, considering the effort that this sport requires, is to always bring something to eat.

Did you know that wool absorbs sweat releasing it into the air and keeping the skin dry?

The fine fibers of merino wool have an extraordinary natural property: they are able to wick sweat away from the skin. Unlike many synthetic fibers, wool is in fact hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs the surrounding water vapor.

Merino wool can store up to 35% of its specific weight in water vapor and remain dry to the touch.

In summer, merino wool absorbs the moisture generated by the body, making it evaporate to the outside and conducting the heat away from the skin. Compared to synthetic fabrics, wool can transfer 25% more moisture from the skin to the outside, which can be equivalent to a drop in temperature of up to 4 degrees.

The skin remains fresh and dry even when the temperature rises or physical activity becomes particularly intense.

In winter, on the other hand, wool keeps body heat constant. How? Merino wool is an active fiber, which reacts to both external and body temperature, creating or dispersing heat to balance the skin’s microclimate.

It therefore regulates body heat by keeping it constant, and keeps us warm in winter and cool in summer.

Odour resistant

Another extraordinary property of wool is its resistance to odours.

Bacterial growth on natural fibres like merino wool is lower than on synthetic ones, preventing the development of unpleasant odours.

Furthermore, thanks to its complex chemical structure, wool retains odours within the fibres, releasing them only when washed. This is why a merino wool garment can be worn several times before being washed.

Wool also absorbs part of the sun’s UV rays, protecting the skin, which makes it particularly suitable for sun exposure, in summer and winter.

Extremely soft

For me, trail running is the rediscovery of the most primitive and inner positive aspects of us human beings: the competition and the challenge with ourselves, as well as the journey and the discovery of the unknown. Every race is different; every challenge is always fascinating.

Cristina Tasselli and Marco Mori are Founders of TRM – Trail Running Movement, a sports association specializing in training and nutrition programs for Endurance and Ultra Trail Running. The award-winning athletes and coaches share their thoughts and suggestions with us.

 

“Trail running is an athletics discipline that involves the entire body and also engages the athlete mentally, accustoming him or her to face difficulties, to maintain high levels of concentration to plan and find unexpected solutions,”

explains Cristina Tasselli. To date, the coach is the only Italian woman athlete to have travelled 900 km and 55,000 m. D+ in the mountains in a single stage race, the Transpyrenea, organized on the border between France and Spain.

“Nothing is ever discounted or completely predictable, as external conditions are constantly evolving. That is why we need good basic preparation, a spirit of adventure and the desire to overcome one's limits and fears.”

“Trail running is a unique sports discipline because it combines the practice of sport with the pleasure of living in direct contact with nature and its incredible landscapes, which are always changing in terms of colors and smells,”

adds Marco Mori, Tasselli’s co-founder of TRM – Trail Running Movement.

The love of nature plays a fundamental role in the passion for this discipline: “Trail running is escapism from the civilized world, a dive inside the pristine beauties of Planet Earth,”

Nature, with its sudden climate changes, along with the involvement of the  involvement of the entire body in an activity characterized by variations in rhythm, from low to high intensity, determines the choice of the most suitable clothing:

“I choose the garments for training and competitions according to three main criteria: comfort, breathability and thermoregulation. The garments worn must adapt to various situations. In addition, the races last many hours, and the wrong clothing can compromise the performance,”

So, what are the most suitable garments in action during the race?

A breathable, thermoregulating t-shirt, with long or short sleeves depending on the climate, and a sweatshirt like Ocelot:

“My favourite for cold climates, when the temperature drops as low as -10°C”

explains Mori,

Tips for a responsible lifestyle (and wardrobe)

If we have improved in some way during this unprecedented year, perhaps it was with regard to awareness. The challenges of 2020 have led us to think about how connected we are to each other and to the environment around us. We can no longer ignore the fact that all our choices have an impact on the environment and on people, and, going beyond that, also on future generations. That is why we must all do our part. To contribute, all together, to creating the world we would like to live in, starting with our daily choices. There are many ways to practice a green lifestyle. We will talk about 3 of them.

Choose natural fibres

During washing in the washing machine at high temperatures, synthetic fibres release plastic microparticles into the water. Once dispersed in the environment, these are ingested by fish and enter our food chain. Avoiding synthetic fibres is therefore necessary not only to protect the environment, but also our own health. Fabrics of natural origin also have other qualities. They are biodegradable and, in the case of merino wool, they are naturally resistant to odours, allowing you to reduce washing and thus the use of detergents that are potentially harmful to the environment.

Buy less, buy better

Buying quality garments is another important choice for environmental sustainability.

The clothing industry is now known to be among the most polluting in the world, contributing to the climate crisis with its emissions. Ever-cheaper clothing and accessories lead to the disposable consumption of clothes, which are bought and used even for a single season. The main way to contribute to the protection of the environment is undoubtedly to buy less and buy better, investing in clothing and accessories produced with high quality raw materials designed to last over time.

Asking for transparency from the brands we buy

In the West, we buy an estimated 400% more clothes than we did twenty years ago. The fashion industry has reached a pace that might compromise not only the protection of the environment, but also that of people and animals. Choosing brands that make traceability their strength, describing their production chain in a transparent manner, is the only way to not contribute with our purchases to the exploitation of workers and natural resources.
