Precisely for this reason, on the occasion of the second appointment of the “All about sustainable wool” section, we decided to continue the wonderful journey of wool passing to the shearing phase and sale of the precious raw material involved in the production. 

Discover all the secrets of wool selection and auctions with Fabrizio Botto Poala, Sourcing Manager of Successori Reda, expert in raw materials and fine wool, as well as Head of Reda’s farms in New Zealand. 

Why did Reda decide to invest in farms in New Zealand?

“Because in 1993 an apartment in Tokyo, Japan cost as much as 10,000 hectares in New Zealand, at that time it seemed like a nice way to diversify the business. In fact, the real reason why Reda invested in New Zealand is to be able to fully learn the knowledge of the raw material, wool. To do this we had to “get our hands dirty”, we had to live alongside the breeders, understand their language and face the same challenges. Breeders are strategic partners for Reda and to have had the opportunity to enter and understand part of their world was an honor.“

So how long have you been active in New Zealand?  “Next year we will celebrate the 30th anniversary, a great achievement for Reda.” 

How does Reda’s farm system work in New Zealand and how much is it related to the direct supply of raw material? 

“Like all Reda divisions, the farms are independent, in the sense that they must be economically viable. In each of them there is a dedicated manager who works with passion, and is supported by the group. Reda farms can produce 600 bales of wool, which if purchased in full is equivalent to a week of production in Reda. They are therefore not strategic for the supply of wool, but for the know-how they allow us to acquire. The goal for farms is to produce a product for the market, at the best possible selling price. If the wool produced is suitable for Reda we will also offer our price, but if there is another customer ready to pay more, welcome.”

What are the challenges faced by Merino Wool sheep farmers?

“The most difficult challenge that any merino sheep farmer faces is that of climate. Climatic events, droughts, rains, winds, are the only things that are difficult to predict, and each of them can significantly influence the quality of the product, or wool. A good manager knows how to react to these events and mitigate these variations as much as possible.“

What makes the wools used by Reda for the production of its fabrics unique?

“The obsessive constant search for quality. If we start from an excellent raw material we will be able to be more efficient during all stages of transformation, and reduce the costs caused by the non-quality of the fiber. Being faster at producing thread or fabric and at the same time reducing defects make us a quality company. As a great American writer said, “Quality improvement is the main source of cost reduction.“ 

When does the wool shearing take place and what does it involve?

“The shearing activity takes place towards late winter/early spring (September/October), and it is the time when the fleece is removed from the sheep. Shearing, like the harvest, is the most delicate moment on the farm. It represents the moment in which the fruits of the work of the last 12 months are harvested, and we realize if the product, the wool, is of quality or has undergone variations that can somehow reflect on the quality of it. A quality product will always find customers ready to buy it, a product with defects will suffer discounts from the market. These are hectic weeks, where you start working at 7 am and where the music is always loud, this helps the team of shearers and discarders to keep up with high rhythms. 

It’s definitely an experience to include in the list of things to see.“

How does the selection of the raw material work? 

Once the fleece is obtained as a result of the shearing, the fiber is spread on a table and the discarders take care of selecting and dividing the fleece according to certain characteristics quickly and meticulously. The wool taken from the back, for example, will be separated from that of the legs and belly which are considered less valuable because of the naturally present impurities that are reflected in the quality of the fiber. For this reason, the first stage of selection is particularly important. 

Afterwards, the wools thus selected are sent to the places where the auctions take place.

“Batches of raw material are made available to buyers for visual inspection. In addition, a whole range of physical data regarding the batch is provided, for example, fineness, length, yield, percentage of vegetable and strength. For Reda the visual inspection, the ability to touch, test the batch is a fundamental requirement. Only after the inspection can we give our qualitative assessment. If the subjective evaluation coincides with the numbers provided by the analyzes, we can enter the type, if something does not fit we recheck and retest the lot, until they eliminate any doubt.“

Can you tell us about the world of auctions? 

“Auctions are the way to sell wool as transparently as possible, where prices are decided according to supply and demand, and we have always supported them. It is the moment when the breeder “virtually” meets the buyer. Each batch of wool is auctioned and every buyer, if interested, can make his offer. The rhythms are very fast, the lots to passed are many and time is short. There are about ten buyers who buy wool all over the world, mainly from Europe, China and India. The buyers have all known each other for many years, they are people who at the end of the evening can be at the pub for a beer, but during the auction they fight over every single lot.“ 

What do you think will be the future of wool and the possible innovations that will involve the world of wool?

“We have seen disruptive changes in many sectors, for example in the automotive industry the arrival of Uber or for hospitality the arrival of Airbnb. Even in the world of wool I think that important innovations will soon arrive. Digital innovation is one of these that will involve the entire supply chain, from the breeder in the management of the farm, to the brokers, to the buyers with regard to the wool trade. Changes are never easy to accept, but they are a stimulus to improvement and those who adapt faster will certainly benefit.” 

How will the consumer’s approach change, if it changes, over the years? 

“It is certain that the consumer’s approach will change, and today we are thinking about how the consumer of tomorrow, that is, our children, what we call Generation Z will approach the purchase of products. We have bet that sustainability will be the keystone in the future decisions of all consumers, regardless of the type of product they buy. There is more and more attention to the level of environmental impact, and those who tomorrow prove with certainty that their product has a lower impact than others will be more successful. 

This was our bet made way back in 2000. A sustainable company is not born overnight, but becomes so after many years of work by everyone, from the CEO to the operator who works on the frame.“ 

What makes Rewoolution a unicuum in sportswear? Which garment do you prefer among those of Rewoolution? 

“Difficult to choose, it’s like asking the winemaker if the wine he produces is good. Surely Rewoolution creates a product that I would call cool, uses 17.5 microns fine wool, is versatile, can be used both by those who practice sports or to live outdoors and is worn well both in winter and summer, it is something very interesting. 

Personally, my favorite product is the polo shirt, simple but at the same time elegant.“

Eva Toschi, 30 years old (for a few weeks yet) aspires to be able to call herself a writer. Born and raised in Rome, where she studied law, she realized very early on that she didn’t like wearing high heels and suits but more like ripped trousers and climbing shoes. Author of the book “Per la mia strada”, “On my route”, five years ago she made an important decision for her life. We will tell you more about it as we go on with the interview.

This year you published your first book, in which you tell your story and your choice to live in and for the mountains.

During my university years I started climbing and as I spent my days in nature, outside the Grande Raccordo Anulare, I realized that this was the space where I could feel myself, where able to express myself. That seed grew in the years to come until I could no longer pretend nothing happened and I had to make a choice: I bought a van (although it wasn’t as easy as it might seem) and I started to live like that, pursuing my passions. 

Tell us about a typical day in the van. What do you do? 

It depends a lot on whether I’m alone or with friends. Although the friendships I’ve made over the years have been very important, the days that have marked me the most are the ones I’ve spent alone. When I’m alone in my van, I wake up calmly, have breakfast in bed, wash up in the kitchen sink, and go out to stretch. Normally I get right down to work, if there’s a connection where I slept, so then I’m free to do what I’m actually out and about in the van: experiencing nature in the way that feels most spontaneous at the time. Sometimes it’s climbing (not alone, of course), sometimes it’s running, sometimes it’s just walking and lying on the grass reading a book or writing. When I’m out and about in the van I generally only cook one meal, so as not to waste too much gas, so when it’s time for dinner I put on something warm, lock myself in and eat, maybe in front of a film. Obviously, this is if I have everything I need, otherwise the day is peppered with shopping, loading and unloading water, looking for a nice place to park and spending a few days stationary.  

Which compromise exists between spending the days in the van or at home? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Being at home has undeniable benefits. You have everything at your fingertips. However good this may be, we tend to settle down and become lazy, even in our minds. Living in a van, with all the inconveniences it involves, leads to living life in a simpler way, and our souls benefit too: we start to value the little things we take for granted and experience everything a little more intensely, for better or for worse. Now I do both, living at home and in the van, but if I spend too much time in one way or another, I feel the need to change. But in the end. for me, the days at home are only enjoyable if they are the ‘holiday’ from life in the van.

The pandemic has taught us that you don’t need to go too far from home to do outdoor sports. What do you think about that?

It’s true. I think we have trained our sense of exploration out of necessity, because we couldn’t do otherwise. I think exploring our ‘backyard’ is great, also because you can have authentic experiences not far from home, but the fact remains that moving in unfamiliar environments is also very stimulating. I think the best thing is to keep doing both. 

We imagine that life in a van is anything but comfortable, is there an “inconvenience” that you are now fond of and would not leave behind?

There are many, but one priceless inconvenience for me is getting out of the van in the silence of the night and taking a last pee before going to bed. This simple act, just because it is done in nature and not at home, makes me feel free, makes me feel wild. It makes me feel connected to the environment, like an animal. Ah, of course I throw the toilet paper in my basket in the van 😉 

Is there an episode that has confirmed to you over the years that this choice is right for you?

When I wrote my book and retraced my story, I had many moments to reflect on the choice I made. In this journey backwards I have never had a regret. To have had the courage to write about everything, even the darkest moments, and to have been willing to share it is for me the confirmation that I did exactly what I had to do. 

Writing for you means “going deep”. When does writing about the outdoors and sport help you to be in touch with yourself and the world?

Writing about what I see, what I feel, is everything to me. It’s no coincidence that my passion for the outdoors has grown along with my passion for writing: for me, experience and storytelling are complementary, one cannot exist without the other. Writing is my way of communicating to myself and to the whole world at the same time.

What role does sport play in your day?

More than sport as a physical activity, I practice outdoor disciplines, activities that are not only good for my body, but also help me to have a more intimate relationship with myself and help me to grow. These disciplines play a central role in my days: if I am not practising them, I am planning them or writing about them. 

Which sports do you practice the most? Which home resorts do you prefer to go to?

I go a lot depending on the season, partly because I like to get away for a while to regain my motivation: in winter I mainly ski mountaineer in my home resort, Santa Caterina Valfurva (and in spring in the Forni Glacier), while in the warmer seasons I climb. One spot I consider home is Val Masino but climbing for me is also an excuse to travel, so I practice it wherever my van takes me. 

How important is it for people like you to be properly equipped, from underwear to gear?

It’s essential. I spend most of my days in nature, often in extreme conditions, and I always try to be equipped with what I need. The right equipment allows me to have the adventures I crave and almost always write about. In short, if I follow this reasoning, the equipment allows me to live, in all senses 🙂

What are your plans for this winter?

As well as continuing with the project I am developing here at home, of skiing all the Valfurva peaks and telling the story of the area through this medium (have a look at our website https://www.valfurvaallyoucanski.it/), I also want to ski in new places. I have never used skiing as an excuse to travel, and I would like to start doing so. On the writing side, I’m laying the foundations for two new projects: a new novel and something a bit special about nature and skiing. But I can’t tell you any more than that.

Maurizio Rellini is a professional photographer from Terni in Umbria. He began photographing in 1999, and then started his own professional activity in 2005. Since then he collaborates with many companies, magazines and agencies, traveling all over the world to discover places still little known.

How did your passion for photography begin and how did you later become a pro photographer?

My passion began when I rented a camper after high school and left with two friends for the North Cape in Norway. It was the first trip I took without a fixed return date. We left a little more than a month, but at the time it felt like a year. I took my father’s old Nikon FM2 with me, bought some slides and started shooting.

Your photography is also heavily influenced and connected to the outdoors, how have you experienced the last year?

It’s been stressful. At night I dream about the places I’m most fond of and all I dis was planning. But it’s also true that for the first time in a long time I’ve had the opportunity to study and explore aspects that I had neglected. In doing so, three new projects were born this year that will be challenging, but at the same time will enrich my photographic activity for the coming years.

Do you draw inspiration from any photographers?

Only from those of the past: Fontana, Micheal Fatali and Galen Rowell for landscape, Basilico and Micheal Kenna for architecture. I also love the vision of architects like Zaha Hadid and painters like Bruegel and Hopper. Today’s outdoor and landscape photography is dominated by short-lived aesthetic trends that don’t resonate with the market, so I don’t follow it as much.

You travel a lot to take your photographs, what is one place you will never forget and why?

My favourite places are Milford Sound in New Zealand, mainly because it feels like the end of the world. Canyonlands, one of those places where you can enjoy a fantastic solitary experience of American landscapes without the stress of mass tourism. Last but not least, the Chinese rice paddies, visiting them is like going back 400 years and immersing yourself in the ethnic minorities while doing without internet, electricity, paved roads and modernity.

The photo project that represents you the most so far?

The next one! Actually I recently produced an online photography course that a lot of photographers are already taking. Another project that I’m very interested in is the one with Rewoolution, a brand that I’ve been working with for years and that brings me to shoot advertising campaigns around the world. They have always given me the utmost expressive and artistic freedom, so it’s a very rare case of commissioned work that I can complete in the way I prefer. It allows me to be inspired by the moment, circumstances and imagination.

To shoot outdoors you have to be ready for anything, how do you manage your clothing in winter and summer?

I’m a true lover of technical fabrics and can’t live without breathable t-shirts and shells. Since I have to move around with photographic equipment all the time, comfort is also an important factor. As a result, layered clothing is the ideal solution in any area of the world in which I have found myself traveling. When I’m shooting in very cold areas and plan on spending a lot of time outdoors without physical activity, I use Primaloft or down jackets.

I’m a true lover of technical fabrics and can’t live without breathable t-shirts and shells. Since I have to move around with photographic equipment all the time, comfort is also an important factor. As a result, layered clothing is the ideal solution in any area of the world in which I have found myself traveling.

Have you had the opportunity to try Rewoolution products, your three favourites and why?

Ever since I started working with Rewoolution I have been using their products and have come to love merino wool. I love the feeling of having something really natural on. Even when I’m sweating in wet conditions these garments always stay dry, comfortable and odour free.

What do you think about merino wool garments? What are your feelings about wearing them?

You have to try them. Before I discovered them I was a big user of synthetic breathable fabrics, but at the same time I found several flaws in them. The feeling of freshness and pleasure on contact with merino wool is a big difference when you spend a whole day outdoors working. Finally, it allows me to not have to constantly strip and re-cover as conditions change.

What advice would you give to a young photography and outdoor enthusiast who would like to pursue a path like yours?

I would advise them to figure out what makes them happy. There are a lot of people who enter in the world of photography trying to make a career out of it and end up photographing what they don’t like, often for financial reasons or because they don’t find their way right away. The apprenticeship is essential, but we must never forget that some things give us emotions and others do not.

What do you think photography will be like in 10 years?

Years ago it was necessary to spend a lot of money to become a professional photographer. Today, the latest phones would be enough to do many jobs well. Probably in the next few years photography will be even more accessible to everyone and it will be possible to do it with even more portable devices. However, it will be more and more volatile, so it will be necessary to develop languages and contents able to last over time. The only certainty is that there will be more and more photography in our lives.

Interview with Patrizia Ambrosi, Digital Creator, and outdoor sports fan. 

This unprecedented, challenging, and difficult year prevented us from traveling and forced us to change our habits. But it also opened our eyes to what we had.

We have taken a closer look at what surrounds us. We’ve discovered places outside our front doors that we had never explored until then.

And during this period of uncertainty, one certainty has never abandoned us: nature.
Nature is our consolation, as a happy place in which to take refuge.

“For me, Nature is a refuge in times of difficulty. I feel it is ready to welcome me in the saddest moments and show me, even in difficulties, the small fascinating things that surround us”. Patrizia Ambrosi, Digital Creator, and outdoor sports fan, tells us,
“Being immersed in nature, especially in the mountains, fills me with energy”.

When and how did your passion for the mountains and outdoor sports begin?

It started when I was a child and spent my summer holidays with my grandparents in Austria or in the mountain house in Trentino.
 For me, it was a mission to follow my grandfather or my parents on long mountain hikes: each time, I discovered new things and experienced strong emotions. Since then, when I am in the mountains, I am sure that I am in my happy place

What role did Instagram play in the growth of this passion?

For me, Instagram is a means of sharing the emotions and sensations that the mountains, or nature in general, are able to arouse. Through my profile, I try to show my passion for outdoor sports.

This last year has allowed us to discover places close to home that we had not considered before. Are there any recent " discoveries" you have made, thanks to travel restrictions?

During this past year, I have been lucky enough to spend most of my time in the Dolomites at my family’s home in Trentino.
If you have never been there, I absolutely recommend stopping in Madonna di Campiglio, where there are many mountaineering routes, as well as beautiful excursions suitable for everyone.
Even Lake Garda, where I currently live, offers walks with breathtaking views such as the South-East ridge of Monte Pizzocolo (the photos displayed on this page were taken there – Ed.).

Tell us about your excursion to Monte Pizzocolo.

The journey took about 3 hours, including many breaks, because I was with friends who had less hiking experience. The South-East ridge (the one we have chosen) is very panoramic and suitable for anyone who doesn’t suffer from vertigo, while the South ridge is for experts.
For those looking for a less demanding walk, there is a third, easier path, which we followed on the way back to close the loop route.

At the top, we ate and waited for the sunset, sitting on the benches outside the bivouac, where you can spend the night.

How would you define your relationship with nature?

For me, nature is essential; it makes me feel good. Nature is life.

How do you contribute to safeguarding the environment? Do you consider yourself an environmentalist?

I do not think I’m an environmentalist, but I am very connected to nature and to our Earth; environmental sustainability was also the subject of my graduate thesis. In a consumerist society like ours, I think that small daily choices can make a difference, such as always having an aluminium water bottle, trying to shop at small local shops, or, while hiking, always carrying a bag for trash. In my small way, I try to take care of nature, while being aware that it takes care of us and allows us to live and survive.

What are your “musts” for an outdoor adventure?

A backpack, an aluminium bottled water, fruit snacks, a sweatshirt, a windbreaker, and a spare T-shirt.

What are your favourite Rewoolution garments?

Photographer, filmmaker, travel enthusiast, part of the Rewoolution team and much more. Marten Suhre was born on a farm in southern Germany and has been passionate about photography since his childhood. Thanks to the digital world and the internet, he has gradually made a name for himself as a content creator! Find out more about him in this interview!

Hi Marten, can you tell us when your love for photography started?

It started during my childhood, just before digital cameras came on the market.

I grew up with my three brothers on an old farm. So my first models were cats, dogs, chickens and whatever else there was.
At that time there was still film with 36 photos.
It was really a completely different kind of photography. You had to think carefully about whether it was worth taking a photo or not, because each one had to be paid for with your own money.
It was a lot of fun and I still remember how exciting it was to finally hold the result in your hand after several days of developing the film.
But those were really only the early years, and the first digital cameras soon became available. When I was 14 I went to the Norwegian mountains for the first time with my father and my two brothers. We walked through Hardangervidda National Park for a week with backpacks and tents. 

One evening, when we pitched our tent in a remote valley and had just lit our camping cooker, hundreds of wild reindeer crossed the valley right in front of our campsite. It was an unforgettable experience and we hid behind a rock to watch them graze and drink from the river.
After about half an hour they went away and left us completely enthralled by the experience.
I think it was this trip that really ignited my enthusiasm for nature photography.

Why do you love photographing in nature so much?

For me, nature is a wonderful, perfect and versatile place where I always find new inspiration. Depending on the time of day and the weather, a single place can create so many different moods and this is what fascinates me about nature.

Being outdoors, travelling and being able to take pictures is the ultimate feeling of freedom and adventure for me. When I am out in nature for a day or, of course, a whole week, I feel completely there and alive.

Travelling to unknown places is incredibly exciting, but sometimes we forget that even close to home there can be beautiful places. The year 2020 has taught us to appreciate everything that is close to us. What has this period taught you?

During this period, when travelling is almost impossible, I found some beautiful places around the corner from my home that I would never have encountered otherwise.

I also visited places I already knew and saw them in a new light or with a different focus. So it took a lot more creativity to get a good photo. Looking back, I think this period also made me improve in my photographic skills.

In recent years, there has been a strong return of young people photographing and filming. How do you explain this phenomenon?

I think today it is easier than ever to take photos or film and show them to a large audience on the Internet. Of course, this motivates many young people to do the same.

My grandfather, for example, took photos passionately and very well, but unfortunately he never had the opportunity to show his work to a wide audience, it probably never bothered him, he just did it for himself and his family.

What equipment do you use to take your photos and film your clips?

My first good camera, which I still use today, is the Olympus Omd em10 mark II. It is a small but indestructible camera. That’s why I have several interchangeable lenses. It is perfect for outdoor activities and travelling. Since I am doing more and more videos, I got the Panasonic GH5. You can’t go wrong with it when filming, and I can still use my old lenses.

Also, I always have my DJI Mavic with me.
Drone photography is a big passion of mine and I try to take it with me on every trip.

The camera and optics are important. But so is the right outdoor clothing. You have recently used Rewoolution products, which ones did you choose, why and how did you get on?

As a landscape photographer you always depend on suitable and practical outdoor clothing. Rewoolution produces really great clothing in merino wool. A super eco-friendly and highly efficient material for outdoor clothing.

I own the Derry jacket and the Castor jumper. On my last few ski trips I really enjoyed the merino wool. It’s impressive how warm it keeps you.

Which photographers or filmmakers are you most inspired by?

There are several, I think in landscape photography Chris Burkard and Alex Strohl were among the first to inspire me in my work.

In drone photography it’s Tobias Hägg, he takes some incredible photos from the air and when it comes to film, Peter McKinnon and Bryn North. But there are many others who inspire me, I would have a very long list.

A bad dream you would never want to fulfil?

Given the current situation, the biggest nightmare would be not being able to travel anymore. There are too many places I still want to visit.

Your lifelong dream instead?

To inspire people through my work and to create something that can last longer than me, that would be my very big dream.

In the middle of coral atoll, at the end of a crater, stands a tiny island of fine sand. The fishermen have always called it Abu Kizan.

With the intensification of maritime traffic at the end of the 1800s, the admiralty decided to facilitate navigation
by building a series of lighthouses along the route taken by their ships, guaranteeing a safe passage, even at night.

That day on the atoll of Abu Kizan, the lighthouse of Daedalus was born.
In 1993, major restoration work was carried out, including the mechanism on which the fascinating Fresnel lamp revolved.
The mechanism went from mechanical to automatic, losing its ancient charm, but guaranteeing additional security for passing ships.

The view from the top of the lighthouse is breathtaking, with two piers jutting out into the open sea, resting on the light sand, making this place unique in the world.
The sea that surrounds it is a riot of coral, fish and colours.
The ancient magic of Daedalus outside and under the water lives on.

Backstage

I saw the Daedalus lighthouse in the early 1990s, when we sailed on small boats to discover the secrets of the Egyptian Red Sea. Over the years of exploration and adventurous navigation, we floated on an open book still to be read. These experiences taught me to always sail in the direction of a dream.

The naturalist tells us of sailors who discovered an island in the Red Sea during Ptolemy’s time.

Shipwrecked, exhausted and hungry, they began to dig herbs and roots from the earth.
They extracted a green stone similar to an emerald and called it Zebjrged.
The island took this name and in return, offered its precious green stones.
From the time of the pharaohs until the last century, valuable olivine was extracted from the island’s mines and appreciated all over the world.
One day, Zebjrged island disappeared, swallowed up in memory. Political diatribes erased it from the maps and olivine lost its value. For a long time, only fearless fishermen approached, defying winds and bad weather, guarding the secret of the mysterious island’s position.
It’s July 1990, on a torrid afternoon common in these parts. An old fisherman in a smoky bar whispers of miraculous fish in the waters of an island far from the coast and beaten by strong winds.
Aboard two small boats, we set sail in search of Zabargad.
A precious sheet of paper bears the lines left by the old fisherman’s pencil. They indicate a route and an approximate position in the middle of the sea.
The island was waiting for us in all its beauty. Zabargad emerged from the glassy sea.
It would never again disappear into the mists of memory.

“Topazos is located in the Red Sea, three hundred furlongs from the continent. Although cloudy and beaten by strong winds, it has been long sought by sailors”, said Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis historia of 77 A.D. 

Backstage

I was fortunate to see the island of Zabargad reborn by participating in the first research expedition. These privileges will remain my lifelong traveling companions. For many years, we were the only divers to breathe the magic of the island of green stones and discover its seabed. I went through it dozens of times to explore every hidden corner. The olivine mines, the emerald-coloured lagoon where the turtles lay their eggs, the ospreys’ nests, the submerged wrecks and the seabed were so rich they leave me breathless today. The old fisherman really existed and thanks to him, we found the island with green stones.

An immense white tide lights up before the eyes; a shimmering sea that vanishes into infinity.

It is a dazzling light reflected by every tiny crystal that shines like the most precious diamond.
In this no man’s land, Sherif bends his back hundreds and hundreds of times every day to give shape to the block of salt in a way few people know.
The origin of this ancestral movement is lost in the mists of time: back when a slab of salt was a replacement for money, and each ganfur had to be cut to perfection.
None of these men still knows its origin today, but the fear that one day all this will disappear is as palpable and sharp-edged as a salt crystal.
Sherif has coal-black skin; his hands are like boulders, not stopping for even a moment.
Each cut slab is a piece of bread earned, a fragment of life conquered – and in these parts, life is worth just as much as salt.
Every morning on the plain, the light is blinding and the heat is suffocating, but Sherif and his companions work tirelessly: they split, lift, cut and load the salt.
The dromedary caravan crossed the riverbed to reach this place accompanied by the caravan driver’s chant, a melody so sweet and melancholic that it resounds like an echo in the vastness of the plain.
Sherif doesn’t have a beautiful voice and doesn’t know the caravan’s song, but he has strong arms and hands like boulders.

“Each cut slab is a piece of bread earned, a fragment of life conquered – and in these parts, life is worth just as much as salt.”

Backstage

I have a special relationship that has tied me for many years with Danakil and with the Afar people. I was lucky enough to experience the magic of this place. I followed the caravans along the Saba river while they were carrying the blocks of salt. I learned about fragments of the lives of many of the people who work in the salt plain. Each of them has incredible stories to tell about this tough and hard-to-imagine life. There are dozens of cutters like Sherif, who spend their days always making the same movement. A gesture whose origins are lost in the mists of time.
