Davide and Emma are two nature and documentary photography enthusiasts always engaged in some new adventure. This time, they went into the Moroccan hinterland, a harsh, essential landscape sculpted by wind and light, where life seems to exist in precarious balance between sand, rock and sky.

Their goal was not only to observe and document, but also to understand the subtle relationships that bind animals to their habitats. On this journey they crossed gorges, hamadas and wadis; slept under the stars, walked in the absolute silence of the desert, and explored in search of some of the most iconic species of desert and steppe habitats.

Rewoolution accompanied them on this journey, dressing them in the most technical garments to help them be in the best possible condition at all times. Follow us on this adventure, where each encounter is part of a larger tale: that of a nature that endures and transforms, and of our desire to listen to it and tell its story, with respect.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Marrakesh

Our arrival in Marrakesh coincided with a warm spring evening. Crossing the streets of the Medina to reach our first lodging, we had a chance to savor the bustling streets of the old city.

Upon our arrival, the Riad that housed us for the night was lit by small lamps that brought out its atmosphere, and a small cohort preceded our room-an exciting start.

DAY 2 – Souss-Massa

The day began with the official departure of the trip after breakfast. The destination was Souss-Massa National Park, south of Agadir, one of Morocco’s most significant wetlands for bird biodiversity.
During the trip, the first official bird of the tour was spotted: a male Fringilla coelebs africana (African Finch).

Arriving at the park in the late afternoon, we observed 57 species of birds, including specimens of Geronticus eremita (Ibis eremita), a symbol of the park and among the most endangered species in North Africa.

During the second day inside the National Park, 45 more species were recorded, including a migrating Ciconia nigra (Black Stork) and a Cercotrichas galactotes (Reddish Warbler).

In the afternoon, the expedition continued on to Fort Bou Jerif, an isolated structure at the gateway to one of the most desert areas of the Moroccan hinterland, a favorite territory for various reptile species including cobras and vipers.

We spent the evening searching for wildlife, finding some species of geckos endemic to the area, scorpions and the egg-eating snake-an important sighting.

DAY 3 – At the gates of the Sahara

The day began by analyzing and inspecting the area abutting the old colonial fort, now reduced to ruins: perfect habitat for reptiles.

Exploration kept us busy all morning, expanding the visiting area all the way into a wadi, an Arabic term for a riverbed that is dry most of the year and can turn into a raging torrent during rains.

Crossing this area brought to our eyes how much the power of water can transform the land it floods, making the surrounding land fertile. Perfect habitat for some small mammal species such as desert squirrels and desert obese rat (Psammomys obesus).

The final destination of the day was Plage Blanche, an expansive and isolated Atlantic beach nestled among the dunes of the Sahara and considered among the wildest in Morocco. The area, a 250 km² ecological park, is threatened by future tourism development projects.

In the evening, the group returned to Fort Bou Jerif for another night in search of nocturnal species.

DAY 4 – Direction El Borj

The journey continued in the direction of El Borj, a small isolated village located in southwestern Morocco on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

As we approached our destination, the change in landscape was evident. Steppe scrub composed of thick spurge bushes gave way to bare, dark rocks shaped by the wind into irregular, sharp shapes. The increasingly arid terrain has turned into an expanse of hamada, a plain of crushed stone and compacted slabs where the heat reflects mercilessly, while the only visible trees – rare twisted acacias – stand out like solitary silhouettes on the horizon. It is a silent, still environment where all life seems to cling to the essentials, and the prohibitive temperatures make exploration an action to be carefully considered.

Our arrival is an important moment because of the contact we have on the spot: a landowner of Berber descent who hosts us in his tents, set under a huge dune.

Mubarak, that is his name, brushing up a doughy English like the sand hovering in the air, greets us with some excellent tea. As the sun becomes docile and a gentle breeze picks up, making the temperature around us decidedly more comfortable, we make our way to a nearby rock hill so that we can reach its summit in time to experience the desert sunset. Everything is ablaze in the silence.

As evening falls, we set out in search of some of the target species for this trip, including the dangerous Vipera latastei (Horned Viper).

We advance late into the night looking for signs in the sand. Some of us unearth obvious traces of the reptile’s passage, but the searches are in vain and the fatigue of the many hours of travel takes its toll. A few hours before dawn we are forced to return.

DAY 5 – On the border with Algeria

On the fifth day of the trip we decide to explore by car some of the inland tracks leading to the town of Assa, a few kilometers from the border with the state of Algeria. This move allows us to regain energy and have a better chance of spotting interesting species, being able to explore a wider area than searching on foot.

And indeed, along the way we encounter several specimens of Agama impalearis and Uromastyx acanthinura, two species of reptiles belonging to the Agamidae family, typical of the desert environments of North Africa.

On our return, another night of research along the viper territory awaits us.

DAY 6 – Move to Assaka and return north

The previous night did not bear fruit. Unfortunately, the significantly lower temperature than on previous days probably kept many animals hidden from our view.

We left the silence of the desert and, in a few hours of travel, reached the coastal territory close to the ocean, towards Assaka, where the river mouth turns out to be reduced to puddles of stagnant red water, caused by drought-related bacteria. This area led us to visit some of the most interesting coastal habitats of natural interest, where we were able to observe numerous bird species that we had already encountered during the first few days.

Last relevant observations were the desert skylark Alaemon alaudipes and the blonde courier Cursorius cursor, magnificent specimens that nest in steppe areas and are difficult to observe.

This our return to the northern regions will last a few days and will mark the end of our journey.

The first snows have arrived, and the world of ski mountaineering is back in full swing, so here are some of our tips.

After a year’s stop due to the pandemic, the mountains are full of snow again and the ski lifts are once again welcoming skiers who don’t want to miss a single second of this new and eagerly awaited season. But what better way to enjoy the mountains than by slowly traversing them on skis and skins? To inaugurate the first ski trips of the season, here are six resorts in Italy where you can enjoy ski mountaineering in complete relaxation.

Piedmont, Val Sesia

Let’s start in Piedmont and on the slopes of Monterosa, in Val Sesia, for a holiday based on a far-sighted recovery project. The story of the Pietre Gemelle Resort began in 2005, with the vision of architects Claudio Cola and Davide Gavinelli, who decided to focus on renovating some old buildings to allow tourists to repopulate the area. In just two years, the four old wooden chalets have been refurbished and, in a warm alpine atmosphere, offer their guests a range of services, from spa to wellness centre, to make their holidays as complete and comfortable as possible. The combination of modern and classic alpine style, together with the breathtaking panorama offered by the three peaks of Ortler-Cevedale-Adamello, allows ski mountaineers of all ages to indulge in trails and tours. In the heart of the province of Cuneo there is a place for all the skialp lovers, especially for those who look for unforgettable landscapes.

Skialp days are undoubtedly full of breathtaking views, but when your day starts at sunrise sipping coffee in front of one of the most evocative mountains in the Alps it means that the itinerary looks very inviting. A stone throw from Cuneo and the Langhe, in the very heart of the valley where the river Po was born, the Monviso offers every year skialp routes able to satisfy everyone, from experts to newcomers.
One of the most attended points by all the skialp lovers is surely Pian della Regina (1714 m), a few kilometers above Crissolo. Our route starts from this snowy pick-up point: after spending the night in the van, watched over by the summit of Monviso and embraced by the rest of the mountain range, we wake up at the first light of dawn to enjoy a good coffee with our skiing companions. Orange lights illuminate the valley and give us one of the many breathtaking views of the day.
After checking the equipment and all the tools needed for the hike, the climb begins. The itinerary is thought for intermediate skiers and takes just under four hours to cover about 1300 meters of altitude difference, along a route made up of hollows, small depressions, small lakes, and slopes.

The Start

After leaving the van behind, the route descends along a small service road to a small bridge. From here you follow the now disused ski slope for a while, and then start to climb a short gully: the sound of the stream emerging from the expanse of snow accompanies us, helping us to identify the rocky profile of the mountain. Just enough time to look around and then we continue to climb, with the mass of Monviso always in front of us as a guide.

First stop: river Po

Between gentle slopes and depressions, in a landscapes that rises and falls between small peaks, we leave the view of the valley behind us, reaching Pian de Re, the plain where the source of the river Po is located and which during the winter season can only be reached on foot, with skis or snowshoes. It is impossible not to stop and photograph the stone that bears the inscription “Here the river Po is born”. After a short break, we set off again towards the path that leads to the Quintino Sella Refuge. Following the winding path we reach the first of a series of lakes that will lead us to our destination, Lake Fiorenza (2113 m), in which the north face of Monviso is reflected.

A pearl between the mountains

After leaving Lake Fiorenza, we cross the Vallone dei Quarti to reach Lake Chiaretto: in the middle of a snow-covered hollow, we find ourselves in front of a turquoise-colored pearl of water set at the foot of the mountain. We stop to take in the mountain’s profile with our eyes: above us, the omnipresent peak of Monviso is slowly approaching, announcing that we are “just a little way” from our arrival.

The three routes 

From the lake, the summit of Viso Mozzo can be reached by three possible routes.

The first is the longest and the most suitable for loaded slopes. Crossing the hollow, one arrives at the northern shore of the lake following a semicircular route. Once around the steep ridge above, you star again the climb to reach the back of the mountain that goes above the lake.

The second route, on the other hand, is ideal when there is safe snow. You retrace the hollow in front of the lake until the ascent softens and you reach and cross a rocky outcrop to the west, before going round the ridge and finding much easier ground.

The third and last route ascents the gentle slope of the lake to reach a small hollow. From here, the climb continues along a hillside dotted with large rocks, until you reach a valley nestled between Costa Piatta Gelata and Rocca Truné. One last steep climb and then up again on a gentle, almost flat slope to Colle del Viso.

Arrival and… the descent

Once you reach the Colle, we cross 300 meters difference in-height which separates us from the southern ridge. From here to the peak the route is all straight and ends with a cement cross. Here’s Viso Mozzo!

The view is incredible: from this natural panoramic terrace we can observe the Monviso, the entire Cresta Berhault, the Great Lake of Viso, the Quintino Sella refuge and, with a bit of luck, you can find the first ever refuge opened by CAI, the Alpetto refuge. Just enough time to refresh yourself and you will be able to resume your descent along the same route you took on the way up, enjoying the view of the valley even more as you approach the finish line.

It’s a special day and, with the right company, I’m ready to takle the Alta Via of Fundres, a spectacular itinerary, surrounded by the unspoiled nature of the Dolomites, which starts from Vipiteno in the Alta Valle Isarco and leads nearby Brunico in Val Pusteria, in the heart of Dolomites.

Discovering the Alta via of Fundres

Six stages for many but not for all

This route is divided in six stages (one per day) and requires both good physical preparation and the right clothing to face the most technical sections. If you decide to trek the Alta Via with your family, it is recommended that children are at least 15/17 years old and trained to face the mountains. Every day, in fact, you walk at an average altitude of 2000 meters for at least seven hours, for a total of 70 kilometers and 5600 meters of elevation gain, following the route circled in red.

From Vipiteno to adventure

The first part starts from Vipiteno and reaches the Simile Mountain hut (about seven hours): on the path it is not rare to come across small bushes of strawberries that can cheer the walk. Fast and safe we reach the Simile hut and then we took the path which will lead us to the Bressanone Refuge. We proceed along the path while exploring the surroundings. We believe in the importance of exploring because it allows us to live new and exciting experiences: the most important thing is respecting the customs of the places and the people you meet along the way.

Breath, observe, breath

The following morning, after a rich breakfast, we set off again, full of energy. Along the way we see some groundhogs and shortly after I’m the first noticing an eagle dancing above our heads. In about six hours we reach the Walter-Benninger bivouac, which provides shelter for eight people. Here, we prepare a delicious home-made fondue since the shelter doesn’t provide guests with food, and after a quick chat we slip into our sleeping bags. The following day, we face the path which leads us to Ponte Ghiaccio refuge, and this is the part that most impressed me: you walk along a small stream and then, following the thinning of the vegetation, you find yourself facing an increasingly steep and rocky slope. I take a few seconds to observe the green expanses we have just crossed. I breathe and try to live this unique moment to the fullest.

Ponte di Ghiaccio refuge, a compelling stop

The Ponte di Ghiaccio refuge (2545 meters above sea level) is a minimal structure, buildt using functional materials and in a way to be energy self-sufficient. This is the point where the ascents to many peaks start: the Gran Pilastro, the Grande Mesule or Punta Bianca. The refuge is located on the stretch that connects Lappago with the Fundres Valley and from here you can also see the enchanting Lake Neves. Just enough time to drink a welcome mountain “drink” and we go out again near the refuge to admire a big and beautiful red Moon.

Make the most of the mornings

The next morning, we wake up early, as we have to face at seven to eight hours of walking. Our destination is the Lago Pausa Refuge, near to the homonymous lake, and considered by many people the most evocative stretch of the entire Alta Via: the difference in altitude is challenging (about 1100m) but the view is wonderful, and it is easy to meet ibex, deer and chamois. The last stretch extends from the Lago Pausa Refuge to San Giorgio, in Valle Aurina di Tures and this part of the trail offers unforgettable views too, such as the one on Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Through the territory of the Stelvio National Park, Alta Via dell’Ortles unravels and climbs among ice and rocks, and with its 120km, its peaks of more than 3000 meters high and a total difference in height of 8126m is defined as one of the most difficult trails in the Alps. Due to its features, this Alta Via is a route for expert hikers!

 It can be covered in seven daily stages and it will allow you to admire everything the Park has to offer: from the beauty of the Stelvio ice to the magnificence of the Ortles and the splendid local fauna.

However, if you are not interested in covering the entire trail, the tour and all its seven stages can also be explored individually in day trips out of town.

Alta Via dell’Ortles starts from a symbolic point of the National Park: the Stelvio Pass.

  • His first stage of 18,5km and 1800m difference in height downhill, passing from the Forcola refuge and along the Sentiero delle Malghe, leads to Stelvio, a small town located not too far from Val Venosta. Along these trails you can admire not only the entire chain of the Stelvio glacier and Ortles, but also many flower meadows and countless animals such as chamois and even some bearded vultures.
  • From Stelvio to the Serristori Refuge: with a difference in height of 1796m and a length of 17km, the trail lasts about 9 hours and passes through the Weiderbödele through the Hochstücklwald forest. You won’t miss breathtaking views and efforts.
  • The third day starts right from the Serristori Refuge and continues towards the Nino Corsi Refuge: with a difference in height of 913m and a length of 14km, it is an 8 hours trail that passes through the Pulpito chairlift mountain station and Passo del Beltovo. In this stretch you begin little by little to approach the high altitudes again in order to admire ice and mountains up to the border with Austria.

  • On the fourth day the effort will begin to be felt more, but anyway there will be no lack of altitude: from Nino Corsi Refuge to Pizzini Refuge. With a difference in height of 1000m and a length of 12km, the trail lasts about 6 hours. Various passages on ice will be present on the Gelato Lake pass and it is important to have ice and glacier equipment with you. Especially if you are not an expert, we recommend a Mountain Guide!
  • The fifth day starts from Rifugio Pizzini and arrives in Sant’Antonio: with a difference in height of 900m and a length of 20km, the trail takes about 8 hours. You go down the path from Alta Val Zebrù to Valle Rin Maré. Then continue to the National Park Visitor Center.
  • From Sant’Antonio to the Cancano Lake: with a difference in height of 1400m and a length of 16km, the trail is about 8 hours long. Climb up to 1500 meters and then descend to Parco dei Bagni up to Ponte di Premadio, from here you go up to Valle di Fraele. You go back down and little by little you can see meadows and forests in the distance.
  • From the Cancano Lake to the Stelvio Pass: with a difference in height of 1800m and a length of 22km, the trail takes about 8 hours. Continue to the Fornelle bridge and go up the military mule trail to Malga di Pedenolo until you reach the pass.

At the foot of the Ortles, between ice and rock, this trail crosses some of the most beautiful landscapes in Northern Italy. Trekking from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Leaving Funchal, we immerse ourselves in the island’s wild and surprising nature.

We undertake the ascent from Pico de Areiro (1,818 metres) to Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain on the island at 1,862 metres, along a path that literally leads above the clouds.

This almost magical path connects the two peaks, winding along stairways carved into the rock and through tunnels dug into the tuff.

2020 was a tough year for travelers and always looking for an adventure, how was it for you?

Honestly, during 2020 I explored as much as I did in previous years. Since I live in Salt Lake City, a city with a strong sports and outdoor enthusiast community, I was able to camp, hike, ski, climb, bike, and more without much trouble. I live within a 3 hour drive of many incredible places, so it’s been easy to explore while staying close to home.

How did your passion for sports and mountains come about?

Probably from my family and friends. Being surrounded by so many people who live and appreciate the outdoors, I eventually began to love it too.

Also, I think a huge motivator for me is social media. I see beautiful places near me and immediately want to visit them. I also love documenting and personally sharing these adventures, which is an extra motivation in itself.

You’ve been in so many places this year, tell us some special places in Utah!

I have lived in Salt Lake City, Utah for over 2 years now and until now I have never skied at the infamous Alta Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon and going there for the first time this year turned out to be amazing, especially with the spectacular snow conditions! However, I must admit that I also love skiing in the areas surrounding my town, such as Brighton Resort, Solitude Resort, and Snowbird. In the summer, I enjoy mountain biking close to home following various trails around the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Another great location is Park City, while my favorite place to train is the Trailside Bike Park.

If there was no more snow and winters, what would you do?

I would be very sad if I could no longer ski or enjoy the beauty of winter. However, I have plenty of other activities I could indulge in without the snow. Without a doubt I could train even more with mountain biking and become better at it.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing,” how true is that phrase?

I think this phrase comes more from the preparation you have and not the choice of clothing. Whenever you venture out, it is increasingly important to be as informed as possible about the risks. Pack an extra pair of socks. Don’t forget the rain gear. Preparation is key for any outdoor activity.

You are the first to be a sustainable and nutrition conscious person, how did you come to make this choice?

I have slowly changed my diet over the past 5 years to become what I believe is sustainable for my body and the planet. While I am not an extremist, I do believe that daily choices can help you become a more conscious consumer in today’s society. It doesn’t have to be a choice between tofu or chicken. It can be a simple decision between packaged carrots and fresh produce from the local farmer’s market.

You had the opportunity to test Rewoolution merino wool, how did you find it?

I really liked Rewoolution’s garments! I loved that they were lightweight, but still warm and breathable. I also fell in love with the variety of options I had between garments, like being able to switch between long sleeves and short sleeve versions. Because of this feature I was able to get so many different styles that were functional for everyday life and sports.

A message to all the girls who would like to follow your lifestyle?

I think it’s important for younger girls, who want to participate in perhaps male-dominated sports like skiing and cycling, to know that they don’t have to be the “lady” on duty within a group of guys. There are so many amazing women out there who go the extra mile and it is important to know that they are not the competition. They are there to help you and motivate you to do new things.

How do you see yourself in 5 years?

I don’t care where I am in 5 years, the important thing is that I can happily live a life where I can do the things I love with the people I love.

Of the many beautiful places that rise above Lake Garda, Monte Altissimo, at 2,078 metres above sea level, is one of the most fascinating and amazing to explore. Easily accessible from both Nago and Rovereto in Trentino, this mountain is a popular destination for many locals, but also for some tourists who can’t wait to see the lake from a different perspective.

There are many ways to reach the summit and on this day of hiking we decided to discover the two most popular! The two routes start at different points, but very close to each other.

The first one starts from Rifugio Graziani, a very comfortable place with a large car park. The start of the second one is in Bocca di Navene, about 1km from the refuge, right along the same provincial road that takes you up the mountain. This second itinerary also has a small car park, located in a lay-by on the side of the road, but we advise you, if you plan to start from this point, to arrive early in the morning, otherwise it will be difficult to find a place.

What’s special about these two routes, however, is that they can be joined into a single circle route and we’ll explain how we did it!

First of all, we parked our vehicle at Rifugio Graziani and took path 633 towards Rifugio Damiano Chiesa. The itinerary is easy, the path is wide and unpaved, besides having a constant steepness, it also has the merit of being suitable for all ages. On this side of the mountain the ascent is shorter and more moderate, but it is still a 500m difference in height, so it is easy, but perhaps not for everyone. Along this route you will be able to admire both the landscapes towards Lake Garda and those of Vallagarina.

After 1 hour of walking, many hairpin bends and some obligatory shots, you will arrive at the Rifugio Damiano Chiesa. A few metres behind the building you will find the cross that marks the summit! We advise you not to stop here, but to go a few metres further on, towards the lake, to admire one of the most beautiful views that Trentino has to offer.

Monte Altissimo

After a nice break, a few laughs and a few minutes to enjoy the view we set off for the descent which, against all expectations, will be even more beautiful than the summit!

After 500 m from the summit you can find path 651 to Bocca Navene and this will be your descent. The special feature of this route is that it descends along the ridges of the Lastè di Tolghe and has various viewpoints, as well as a herd of chamois that are very fond of the area and make it their home every year. This route, however, is slightly longer than the other, so it will take you about an hour and a half to reach the Graziani refuge. We can assure you, however, that it will be well worth it. After just a few metres you will realise that the effort will be worth it. Because of the many places with overhangs and ravines, you should proceed with caution, especially if there are children with you.

After about an hour of walking, many views and breathtaking panoramas, you will arrive in a small wood, do not worry and keep following the path, because it will bring you right back to the main road, a few metres below Rifugio Graziani.

These two routes are usually described in the guidebooks as separate, but for a more exploratory experience and to fully discover all the beauty of this mountain, we recommend you do them this way!
