Whether during a trip or in the comfort of your home, to keep a Merino wool garment intact and last for a long time, 3 fundamental steps are necessary, and we will summarize them below.

Merino wool fiber, in fact, is a natural and delicate material that undergoes the effects of the treatments and which, if done incorrectly, inevitably bring visible consequences on the garment.

Before washing any product, it is essential to always read the label and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Follow the simple rules that apply to wool and we summarized in this article by creating a real guide to read when needed.

Step 1 first of all involves washing. There are two ways in which a wool garment can be washed: by hand or in the washing machine

Once the washing is finished, the garments must be immediately removed from the drum to avoid felting that can happen if they remain wet on the bottom of the washing machine.

Hand Washing

The first option is the oldest and safest solution, as it allows you to treat the fabric gently and not stress the fiber. However, even in this case, specific measures are needed.

The water temperature must be kept constant and can be cold or lukewarm, but never hot as it could felt the fiber.

Concerning the soap, you can pre-treat the area that has any stains with Marseille soap and then immerse the garment in a basin or sink containing warm water and mild soap for wool or a few flakes of Marseille soap.

At this point, just lather the garment by moving it gently in the water, without twisting or squeezing it, and then change the water in order to rinse everything and eliminate the soap residue that otherwise helps to harden the fiber.

After rinsing, the garment will be pressed gently between two wipes in order to eliminate the excess of water without squeezing or twisting it.

This type of washing is particularly suitable for those who bring their Rewoolution garments with them while traveling, as it is easily applicable using a basin and simple Marseille soap

Machine Washing

The second washing method, on the other hand, consists in using the washing machine. Also in this case it is important to always check the label of the garment, as wool, to be washed in the washing machine, must have certain characteristics that allow it not to shrink or felt during mechanical washing.

If it is allowed, the garments must be inserted inside out in order to prevent any writings or logos from being damaged by friction. Furthermore, it is mandatory to use the special cycle for wool garments or delicate garments, which must be set at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees and without spinning or reducing it to a minimum, avoiding the use of softeners and bleaches and using only detergent made for delicate fabrics.

Once the washing is finished, the garments must be immediately removed from the drum to avoid felting that can happen if they remain wet on the bottom of the washing machine.

Drying

For drying, Rewoolution garments cannot be placed in the dryer, but, if possible, they should be laid horizontally on a drying rack in order to prevent excessive stress on the fiber, avoiding direct exposure to the sun or sources of excessive heat such as radiators or stoves.

As for ironing, however, it is important to iron the wool at low temperatures and possibly using steam to revive the fiber. Instead, it should be avoided to superimpose the hot iron on logos or writings to prevent them from being damaged.

Finally, to keep them at their best, place them in the drawers by adding a fabric bag containing dried lavender or a stick soaked in lavender, thyme or cedar essential oil. With this natural method you will avoid the formation of the holes typically associated with moths and the garments will have a fantastic scent.

Also, don’t forget that Merino wool fabrics are naturally breathable and thermoregulating and prevent the formation of unpleasant odors. This therefore allows to reduce the number of washes of garments made with this material, impacting less and less on the environment, as well as not dispersing microplastics during washing unlike polyester garments

I am a person that normally is satisfied with the little things, I do not need many people to have fun, believe me 2 or 3 mates are enough to make a day in the mountains memorable. However this morning I decided to venturing in solitary to reach one of my favourite places, Cantinaccio group in the val of Fassa.

I park my car in the uphill installations Vajolet 1- Vajolet 2 and I head with a good gait up to Pian Pecei where a wonderful pasture of cows welcomes me dancing in the meadows with their resonant cowbells.

In an era where you try to reach the peak with the most difficult route band you compete to make elevation gain in the shortest time I decided to go counter-current . I do not care If I get there first or overstep my limits to prove something to someone. I want to amaze every time that I come to these places and I want to live the mountain the way I like, without necessarily have to bring home the highest peak or the most technical via ferrata.

These pale rocks are the reason in which every Saturday morning I decide to wake up from my bed and travel for hundred kilometres. I have a special bond with the Catenaccio because is the first group of the dolomites in which my parents brought me when I was a child. Whereby I took my first cable car, I slept in my first refuge at hight altitude, I discovered what the vie ferrate were and made my fist peak above 9842.52 foot.

Arrival until the fountain where is located near the Garrdeccia refuge to freshen up in this summer warm day and I continue with a long climb until Presuss Vajolet refuge, where I decide to stop and eat a chocolate bar. I enjoy the wonderful amphitheatre with the most famous towers of the Dolomites and I close my eyes for a moment in order to recover the energy to face the most challenging part of the climb of todays day.

I returned to the kingdom of King Laurin to reach again the peak that the first time had fascinated me so much. I pass to greet Sergio at the refuge Passo Principe for lunch and then I head towards the via ferrata to the Catenaccio di Antermoia. I am alone, in the belly of the Dolomites, who accompany  me on this wonderful way between exposed ledges and small walls to overcome. Is not a difficult via Ferrata even less technical but it offers a view on the crane truly breathtaking. At one point I start seeing the cross and I know that shortly I will have to walk the ridge that will take me to the summit. The same ridge that years ago had made me frightened for the (exposition) and now I look with a different eye, that of a person that between this peaks  by now had made her bones and is well aware how to behave respecting the place in which is located but mainly himself.

I arrive just before sunset at the cross of peak and what my eyes see in this moment cannot be describable in words. The pile of clouds that accompanied me during the climb via ferrata finally leaves the space at the sunset that I desired to see from up there. The colours are getting brighter, despite the altitude the sun can warm up the hart and clear your mind of all thoughts . When you get at the top, the problems and anxieties of everyday’s life fade away, because up here everything that is important becomes so small to no longer exist.

At this moment I could get off the refuge for a hot meal and a comfortable bed but this time I took a different decision. I chose this time to remain and spend the night here in the summit to live the experience more completed.

I prepare my bed position with the bivouac bag, the mat and sleeping bag, I drink a herbal tea to warm me up and I get under the covers with the last lights of the dusk. I am terribly tired and as a result I can fall asleep immediately, but by 2 a.m. a gust of quite strong wind wake me up. I do not understand if I am still dreaming because when I open my eyes above me I see million stars running long a white strip, when I realise it is the milky way well distinguishable to the naked eye. I realise that I am awake in the middle on the night at 9842.52 foot on one of my favourites peak without anybody around. This type of adventures make me feel alive because they enable me to have a relation more pure and unspoiled with the nature that surround me.

The alarm rings, it is 5 a.m. and the first lights of the sun start to color the highest peaks, I have never experienced a performance like this in my entire life. Is truly difficult to describe in words such a strong emotion, certain things you cannot explain them, you have to live them to fully to understand it. I turn the gaze one last time towards the cross in the peak smiling because now I can tell to have truly conquered it, after all you learn to know a mountain when you sleep on it.

Discover all the secrets of wool selection and auctions with Fabrizio Botto Poala, Sourcing Manager of Successori Reda, expert in raw materials and fine wool, as well as Head of Reda’s farms in New Zealand. 

Why did Reda decide to invest in farms in New Zealand?

“Because in 1993 an apartment in Tokyo, Japan cost as much as 10,000 hectares in New Zealand, at that time it seemed like a nice way to diversify the business. In fact, the real reason why Reda invested in New Zealand is to be able to fully learn the knowledge of the raw material, wool. To do this we had to “get our hands dirty”, we had to live alongside the breeders, understand their language and face the same challenges. Breeders are strategic partners for Reda and to have had the opportunity to enter and understand part of their world was an honor.“

So how long have you been active in New Zealand?  “Next year we will celebrate the 30th anniversary, a great achievement for Reda.” 

How does Reda’s farm system work in New Zealand and how much is it related to the direct supply of raw material? 

“Like all Reda divisions, the farms are independent, in the sense that they must be economically viable. In each of them there is a dedicated manager who works with passion, and is supported by the group. Reda farms can produce 600 bales of wool, which if purchased in full is equivalent to a week of production in Reda. They are therefore not strategic for the supply of wool, but for the know-how they allow us to acquire. The goal for farms is to produce a product for the market, at the best possible selling price. If the wool produced is suitable for Reda we will also offer our price, but if there is another customer ready to pay more, welcome.”

What are the challenges faced by Merino Wool sheep farmers?

“The most difficult challenge that any merino sheep farmer faces is that of climate. Climatic events, droughts, rains, winds, are the only things that are difficult to predict, and each of them can significantly influence the quality of the product, or wool. A good manager knows how to react to these events and mitigate these variations as much as possible.“

What makes the wools used by Reda for the production of its fabrics unique?

“The obsessive constant search for quality. If we start from an excellent raw material we will be able to be more efficient during all stages of transformation, and reduce the costs caused by the non-quality of the fiber. Being faster at producing thread or fabric and at the same time reducing defects make us a quality company. As a great American writer said, “Quality improvement is the main source of cost reduction.“ 

When does the wool shearing take place and what does it involve?

“The shearing activity takes place towards late winter/early spring (September/October), and it is the time when the fleece is removed from the sheep. Shearing, like the harvest, is the most delicate moment on the farm. It represents the moment in which the fruits of the work of the last 12 months are harvested, and we realize if the product, the wool, is of quality or has undergone variations that can somehow reflect on the quality of it. A quality product will always find customers ready to buy it, a product with defects will suffer discounts from the market. These are hectic weeks, where you start working at 7 am and where the music is always loud, this helps the team of shearers and discarders to keep up with high rhythms. 

It’s definitely an experience to include in the list of things to see.“

How does the selection of the raw material work? 

Once the fleece is obtained as a result of the shearing, the fiber is spread on a table and the discarders take care of selecting and dividing the fleece according to certain characteristics quickly and meticulously. The wool taken from the back, for example, will be separated from that of the legs and belly which are considered less valuable because of the naturally present impurities that are reflected in the quality of the fiber. For this reason, the first stage of selection is particularly important. 

Afterwards, the wools thus selected are sent to the places where the auctions take place.

“Batches of raw material are made available to buyers for visual inspection. In addition, a whole range of physical data regarding the batch is provided, for example, fineness, length, yield, percentage of vegetable and strength. For Reda the visual inspection, the ability to touch, test the batch is a fundamental requirement. Only after the inspection can we give our qualitative assessment. If the subjective evaluation coincides with the numbers provided by the analyzes, we can enter the type, if something does not fit we recheck and retest the lot, until they eliminate any doubt.“

Can you tell us about the world of auctions? 

“Auctions are the way to sell wool as transparently as possible, where prices are decided according to supply and demand, and we have always supported them. It is the moment when the breeder “virtually” meets the buyer. Each batch of wool is auctioned and every buyer, if interested, can make his offer. The rhythms are very fast, the lots to passed are many and time is short. There are about ten buyers who buy wool all over the world, mainly from Europe, China and India. The buyers have all known each other for many years, they are people who at the end of the evening can be at the pub for a beer, but during the auction they fight over every single lot.“ 

What do you think will be the future of wool and the possible innovations that will involve the world of wool?

“We have seen disruptive changes in many sectors, for example in the automotive industry the arrival of Uber or for hospitality the arrival of Airbnb. Even in the world of wool I think that important innovations will soon arrive. Digital innovation is one of these that will involve the entire supply chain, from the breeder in the management of the farm, to the brokers, to the buyers with regard to the wool trade. Changes are never easy to accept, but they are a stimulus to improvement and those who adapt faster will certainly benefit.” 

How will the consumer’s approach change, if it changes, over the years? 

“It is certain that the consumer’s approach will change, and today we are thinking about how the consumer of tomorrow, that is, our children, what we call Generation Z will approach the purchase of products. We have bet that sustainability will be the keystone in the future decisions of all consumers, regardless of the type of product they buy. There is more and more attention to the level of environmental impact, and those who tomorrow prove with certainty that their product has a lower impact than others will be more successful. 

This was our bet made way back in 2000. A sustainable company is not born overnight, but becomes so after many years of work by everyone, from the CEO to the operator who works on the frame.“

“Difficult to choose, it’s like asking the winemaker if the wine he produces is good. Surely Rewoolution creates a product that I would call cool, uses 17.5 microns fine wool, is versatile, can be used both by those who practice sports or to live outdoors and is worn well both in winter and summer, it is something very interesting.

Davide and Emma are two nature and documentary photography enthusiasts always engaged in some new adventure. This time, they went into the Moroccan hinterland, a harsh, essential landscape sculpted by wind and light, where life seems to exist in precarious balance between sand, rock and sky.

Their goal was not only to observe and document, but also to understand the subtle relationships that bind animals to their habitats. On this journey they crossed gorges, hamadas and wadis; slept under the stars, walked in the absolute silence of the desert, and explored in search of some of the most iconic species of desert and steppe habitats.

Rewoolution accompanied them on this journey, dressing them in the most technical garments to help them be in the best possible condition at all times. Follow us on this adventure, where each encounter is part of a larger tale: that of a nature that endures and transforms, and of our desire to listen to it and tell its story, with respect.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Marrakesh

Our arrival in Marrakesh coincided with a warm spring evening. Crossing the streets of the Medina to reach our first lodging, we had a chance to savor the bustling streets of the old city.

Upon our arrival, the Riad that housed us for the night was lit by small lamps that brought out its atmosphere, and a small cohort preceded our room-an exciting start.

DAY 2 – Souss-Massa

The day began with the official departure of the trip after breakfast. The destination was Souss-Massa National Park, south of Agadir, one of Morocco’s most significant wetlands for bird biodiversity.
During the trip, the first official bird of the tour was spotted: a male Fringilla coelebs africana (African Finch).

Arriving at the park in the late afternoon, we observed 57 species of birds, including specimens of Geronticus eremita (Ibis eremita), a symbol of the park and among the most endangered species in North Africa.

During the second day inside the National Park, 45 more species were recorded, including a migrating Ciconia nigra (Black Stork) and a Cercotrichas galactotes (Reddish Warbler).

In the afternoon, the expedition continued on to Fort Bou Jerif, an isolated structure at the gateway to one of the most desert areas of the Moroccan hinterland, a favorite territory for various reptile species including cobras and vipers.

We spent the evening searching for wildlife, finding some species of geckos endemic to the area, scorpions and the egg-eating snake-an important sighting.

DAY 3 – At the gates of the Sahara

The day began by analyzing and inspecting the area abutting the old colonial fort, now reduced to ruins: perfect habitat for reptiles.

Exploration kept us busy all morning, expanding the visiting area all the way into a wadi, an Arabic term for a riverbed that is dry most of the year and can turn into a raging torrent during rains.

Crossing this area brought to our eyes how much the power of water can transform the land it floods, making the surrounding land fertile. Perfect habitat for some small mammal species such as desert squirrels and desert obese rat (Psammomys obesus).

The final destination of the day was Plage Blanche, an expansive and isolated Atlantic beach nestled among the dunes of the Sahara and considered among the wildest in Morocco. The area, a 250 km² ecological park, is threatened by future tourism development projects.

In the evening, the group returned to Fort Bou Jerif for another night in search of nocturnal species.

DAY 4 – Direction El Borj

The journey continued in the direction of El Borj, a small isolated village located in southwestern Morocco on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

As we approached our destination, the change in landscape was evident. Steppe scrub composed of thick spurge bushes gave way to bare, dark rocks shaped by the wind into irregular, sharp shapes. The increasingly arid terrain has turned into an expanse of hamada, a plain of crushed stone and compacted slabs where the heat reflects mercilessly, while the only visible trees – rare twisted acacias – stand out like solitary silhouettes on the horizon. It is a silent, still environment where all life seems to cling to the essentials, and the prohibitive temperatures make exploration an action to be carefully considered.

Our arrival is an important moment because of the contact we have on the spot: a landowner of Berber descent who hosts us in his tents, set under a huge dune.

Mubarak, that is his name, brushing up a doughy English like the sand hovering in the air, greets us with some excellent tea. As the sun becomes docile and a gentle breeze picks up, making the temperature around us decidedly more comfortable, we make our way to a nearby rock hill so that we can reach its summit in time to experience the desert sunset. Everything is ablaze in the silence.

As evening falls, we set out in search of some of the target species for this trip, including the dangerous Vipera latastei (Horned Viper).

We advance late into the night looking for signs in the sand. Some of us unearth obvious traces of the reptile’s passage, but the searches are in vain and the fatigue of the many hours of travel takes its toll. A few hours before dawn we are forced to return.

DAY 5 – On the border with Algeria

On the fifth day of the trip we decide to explore by car some of the inland tracks leading to the town of Assa, a few kilometers from the border with the state of Algeria. This move allows us to regain energy and have a better chance of spotting interesting species, being able to explore a wider area than searching on foot.

And indeed, along the way we encounter several specimens of Agama impalearis and Uromastyx acanthinura, two species of reptiles belonging to the Agamidae family, typical of the desert environments of North Africa.

On our return, another night of research along the viper territory awaits us.

DAY 6 – Move to Assaka and return north

The previous night did not bear fruit. Unfortunately, the significantly lower temperature than on previous days probably kept many animals hidden from our view.

We left the silence of the desert and, in a few hours of travel, reached the coastal territory close to the ocean, towards Assaka, where the river mouth turns out to be reduced to puddles of stagnant red water, caused by drought-related bacteria. This area led us to visit some of the most interesting coastal habitats of natural interest, where we were able to observe numerous bird species that we had already encountered during the first few days.

Last relevant observations were the desert skylark Alaemon alaudipes and the blonde courier Cursorius cursor, magnificent specimens that nest in steppe areas and are difficult to observe.

This our return to the northern regions will last a few days and will mark the end of our journey.

Rewoolution, owned by Reda Group, is created through the application of ZQ Merino wool to technical and athleisure garments. This provides them with the unique properties of wool such as: softness, resistance, thermoregulation, and breathability. For our first piece in the ‘All about sustainable Wool’ column, we wanted to take you back to the origin of this precious raw material.

 

We sat down with Dave Maslen, the General Manager of Markets and Sustainability at the New Zealand Merino Company (NZM).

Founded in 1996 by merino growers, NZM now represents farmers from all over the world who respect the highest environmental and social responsibility standards.

What does ethical wool mean?

“Ethical wool means wool has been produced in a way that aligns to heightened standards with regards to animal welfare, environmental integrity and social responsibility.”

How did you start your work with wool and growers?

Dave has an innate passion for the environment, at university he studied Environmental Sciences and this passion ultimately lead him to his position at NZM. “I started my work with growers back in 2006 when I was lucky enough to start this job with NZM. NZM had already been working for growers for about 10 years, the whole focus of the business was about trying to connect growers with brands to enable long term partnerships that were sustainable for both the brands and the growers.” Dave joined the team at a crucial moment with the launch of the ZQ. “ZQ is about providing ethical wool recognising the exceptional work growers are doing on the farms every day and enabling the wool to flow through the pipeline to consumers that want to align their values to corporate, animal welfare and social responsibility.”

 

How has The New Zealand Merino Company changed over the years?

“In 2006, The New Zealand Merino Company founded ZQ an on farm accreditation platform, since then we have continuously increased the standards, year after year, to ensure our growers have the highest standards in animal welfare, social and environmental responsibility.”

What drove The New Zealand Merino Company to develop ZQRX after ZQ?

ZQRX was launched by NZM to recognise and scientifically track the work done by farmers who have decided to actively engage in regenerative agriculture, and who’s sustainability efforts go beyond what is required to comply with ZQ. “ZQRX is a framework that enables us to accurately benchmark growers current performance across 15 key performance indicators with regards to environmental activity, social responsibility and animal welfare, and to see how they are improving their system over time. ZQRX uses science and data to substantiate growers efforts in areas such as reduction of carbon emissions, improvement of water quality, working conditions, animal welfare and wellbeing standards.”

How has your partnership with Reda developed through the years?

“Reda is an incredibly important partner, not only for NZM, but also to all the growers that supply them. When we partner with brands and supply chains, we tend to partner with those that share a very deep philosophical alignment to us.  That alignment is very much around relationships, trust, integrity, sustainability and doing what is right, not only for consumers but also for growers. This is something that is very true with Reda and it’s very true with us, so it was a natural fit. [..] Our businesses share very similar DNA with regards to what makes us special. The people, the partnership, trust, integrity and continuous striving for innovation, quality and for doing what is right for the planet and for the people.”

What is the The New Zealand Merino Company’s relationship with Growers?

“NZM has a deep relationship with growers, representing approximately 75% of the Merino wool produced in NZ, these relationships go back in many cases two and a half decades. We have a team of Area Managers that work with growers directly, we feel part of the same team [..] this is a very unique proposition for a supply chain or for a brand, in that it enables communication directly to the growers that are supplying the fibre. [..]”

What will be the next innovation in the wool world that will provide further sustainability improvements?

“I think the next innovation that will drive sustainability will be the concept of hyper-transparency and developing tools that we can give consumers and brands absolute visibility and clarity about exactly where the wool comes from, and also how the wool is produced. [..] I think it is hugely exciting and enables consumers to become a lot more involved in the value chain of the products that they purchase and in so doing they will be able to make far more responsible and sustainable choices about what they purchase and start to see best practice to be applied through the supply chain as well.”

How can a fashion brand start its own journey into sustainability with NZ Merino?

“First of all asking questions about their value chain. Do they know where their raw materials come from? Do they know who the suppliers are? Do they have visibility and transparency of their pipeline?”

“In most cases they probably won’t. My recommendation is to partner with a supply chain partner that they trust.[..]”

What are your thoughts about Rewoolution?

“Rewoolution as a brand has always been part of the ZQ program. All the wool that is part of Rewoolution is ZQ certified, so comes from farmers that belong to the world best standards and are also part of the ZQRX platform. For me, Rewoolution represents a leadership position, being a leader is always very challenging, but Rewoolution is providing I guess a blue print for many others to leverage and also something to learn from.”

Do you believe that there is an increased awareness for customers on the clothes they wear?

“We see significant consumer demand towards a greater understanding of the impact that the fashion industry, has on the planet. [..] The curiosity that has been demonstrated by consumers is only going to grow and for me that’s the huge opportunity and something that is extremely important because consumers are the ones to drive positive change for the fashion industry globally. They are the ones to hold brands to account, requiring brands to use more sustainable materials and asking for best practice to be applied on the farmers that produce the wool, and on the supply chain who convert those fibres into ethical products.”

The first snows have arrived, and the world of ski mountaineering is back in full swing, so here are some of our tips.

After a year’s stop due to the pandemic, the mountains are full of snow again and the ski lifts are once again welcoming skiers who don’t want to miss a single second of this new and eagerly awaited season. But what better way to enjoy the mountains than by slowly traversing them on skis and skins? To inaugurate the first ski trips of the season, here are six resorts in Italy where you can enjoy ski mountaineering in complete relaxation.

Piedmont, Val Sesia

Let’s start in Piedmont and on the slopes of Monterosa, in Val Sesia, for a holiday based on a far-sighted recovery project. The story of the Pietre Gemelle Resort began in 2005, with the vision of architects Claudio Cola and Davide Gavinelli, who decided to focus on renovating some old buildings to allow tourists to repopulate the area. In just two years, the four old wooden chalets have been refurbished and, in a warm alpine atmosphere, offer their guests a range of services, from spa to wellness centre, to make their holidays as complete and comfortable as possible. The combination of modern and classic alpine style, together with the breathtaking panorama offered by the three peaks of Ortler-Cevedale-Adamello, allows ski mountaineers of all ages to indulge in trails and tours. Whether you choose to walk to the resort on skis and skins from the cable car or head directly to the nearby Monte Sobretta, this resort is ready to meet your every need.

Trentino-Alto Adige, Valdaora

Moving on to Trentino-Alto Adige, to Valdaora, where the Olangerhof Resort has become a reference point for holidays dedicated to snow and relaxation. Eva Toschi, 30 years old (for a few weeks yet) aspires to be able to call herself a writer. Born and raised in Rome, where she studied law, she realized very early on that she didn’t like wearing high heels and suits but more like ripped trousers and climbing shoes. Author of the book “Per la mia strada”, “On my route”, five years ago she made an important decision for her life. We will tell you more about it as we go on with the interview.

This year you published your first book, in which you tell your story and your choice to live in and for the mountains.

During my university years I started climbing and as I spent my days in nature, outside the Grande Raccordo Anulare, I realized that this was the space where I could feel myself, where able to express myself. That seed grew in the years to come until I could no longer pretend nothing happened and I had to make a choice: I bought a van (although it wasn’t as easy as it might seem) and I started to live like that, pursuing my passions. 

Tell us about a typical day in the van. What do you do? 

It depends a lot on whether I’m alone or with friends. Although the friendships I’ve made over the years have been very important, the days that have marked me the most are the ones I’ve spent alone. When I’m alone in my van, I wake up calmly, have breakfast in bed, wash up in the kitchen sink, and go out to stretch. Normally I get right down to work, if there’s a connection where I slept, so then I’m free to do what I’m actually out and about in the van: experiencing nature in the way that feels most spontaneous at the time. Sometimes it’s climbing (not alone, of course), sometimes it’s running, sometimes it’s just walking and lying on the grass reading a book or writing. When I’m out and about in the van I generally only cook one meal, so as not to waste too much gas, so when it’s time for dinner I put on something warm, lock myself in and eat, maybe in front of a film. Obviously, this is if I have everything I need, otherwise the day is peppered with shopping, loading and unloading water, looking for a nice place to park and spending a few days stationary.  

Which compromise exists between spending the days in the van or at home? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Being at home has undeniable benefits. You have everything at your fingertips. However good this may be, we tend to settle down and become lazy, even in our minds. Living in a van, with all the inconveniences it involves, leads to living life in a simpler way, and our souls benefit too: we start to value the little things we take for granted and experience everything a little more intensely, for better or for worse. Now I do both, living at home and in the van, but if I spend too much time in one way or another, I feel the need to change. But in the end. for me, the days at home are only enjoyable if they are the ‘holiday’ from life in the van.

The pandemic has taught us that you don’t need to go too far from home to do outdoor sports. What do you think about that?

It’s true. I think we have trained our sense of exploration out of necessity, because we couldn’t do otherwise. I think exploring our ‘backyard’ is great, also because you can have authentic experiences not far from home, but the fact remains that moving in unfamiliar environments is also very stimulating. I think the best thing is to keep doing both. 

We imagine that life in a van is anything but comfortable, is there an “inconvenience” that you are now fond of and would not leave behind?

There are many, but one priceless inconvenience for me is getting out of the van in the silence of the night and taking a last pee before going to bed. This simple act, just because it is done in nature and not at home, makes me feel free, makes me feel wild. It makes me feel connected to the environment, like an animal. Ah, of course I throw the toilet paper in my basket in the van 😉 

Is there an episode that has confirmed to you over the years that this choice is right for you?

When I wrote my book and retraced my story, I had many moments to reflect on the choice I made. In this journey backwards I have never had a regret. To have had the courage to write about everything, even the darkest moments, and to have been willing to share it is for me the confirmation that I did exactly what I had to do. 

Writing for you means “going deep”. When does writing about the outdoors and sport help you to be in touch with yourself and the world?

Writing about what I see, what I feel, is everything to me. It’s no coincidence that my passion for the outdoors has grown along with my passion for writing: for me, experience and storytelling are complementary, one cannot exist without the other. Writing is my way of communicating to myself and to the whole world at the same time.

What role does sport play in your day?

More than sport as a physical activity, I practice outdoor disciplines, activities that are not only good for my body, but also help me to have a more intimate relationship with myself and help me to grow. These disciplines play a central role in my days: if I am not practising them, I am planning them or writing about them. 

Which sports do you practice the most? Which home resorts do you prefer to go to?

I go a lot depending on the season, partly because I like to get away for a while to regain my motivation: in winter I mainly ski mountaineer in my home resort, Santa Caterina Valfurva (and in spring in the Forni Glacier), while in the warmer seasons I climb. One spot I consider home is Val Masino but climbing for me is also an excuse to travel, so I practice it wherever my van takes me. 

How important is it for people like you to be properly equipped, from underwear to gear?

It’s essential. I spend most of my days in nature, often in extreme conditions, and I always try to be equipped with what I need. The right equipment allows me to have the adventures I crave and almost always write about. In short, if I follow this reasoning, the equipment allows me to live, in all senses 🙂

What are your plans for this winter?

As well as continuing with the project I am developing here at home, of skiing all the Valfurva peaks and telling the story of the area through this medium (have a look at our website https://www.valfurvaallyoucanski.it/), I also want to ski in new places. I have never used skiing as an excuse to travel, and I would like to start doing so. On the writing side, I’m laying the foundations for two new projects: a new novel and something a bit special about nature and skiing. But I can’t tell you any more than that.
