Rewoolution, owned by Reda Group, is created through the application of ZQ Merino wool to technical and athleisure garments. This provides them with the unique properties of wool such as: softness, resistance, thermoregulation, and breathability. For our first piece in the ‘All about sustainable Wool’ column, we wanted to take you back to the origin of this precious raw material.

 

We sat down with Dave Maslen, the General Manager of Markets and Sustainability at the New Zealand Merino Company (NZM).

Founded in 1996 by merino growers, NZM now represents farmers from all over the world who respect the highest environmental and social responsibility standards.

What does ethical wool mean?

“Ethical wool means wool has been produced in a way that aligns to heightened standards with regards to animal welfare, environmental integrity and social responsibility.”

How did you start your work with wool and growers?

Dave has an innate passion for the environment, at university he studied Environmental Sciences and this passion ultimately lead him to his position at NZM. “I started my work with growers back in 2006 when I was lucky enough to start this job with NZM. NZM had already been working for growers for about 10 years, the whole focus of the business was about trying to connect growers with brands to enable long term partnerships that were sustainable for both the brands and the growers.” Dave joined the team at a crucial moment with the launch of the ZQ. “ZQ is about providing ethical wool recognising the exceptional work growers are doing on the farms every day and enabling the wool to flow through the pipeline to consumers that want to align their values to corporate, animal welfare and social responsibility.”

 

How has The New Zealand Merino Company changed over the years?

“In 2006, The New Zealand Merino Company founded ZQ an on farm accreditation platform, since then we have continuously increased the standards, year after year, to ensure our growers have the highest standards in animal welfare, social and environmental responsibility.”

What drove The New Zealand Merino Company to develop ZQRX after ZQ?

ZQRX was launched by NZM to recognise and scientifically track the work done by farmers who have decided to actively engage in regenerative agriculture, and who’s sustainability efforts go beyond what is required to comply with ZQ. “ZQRX is a framework that enables us to accurately benchmark growers current performance across 15 key performance indicators with regards to environmental activity, social responsibility and animal welfare, and to see how they are improving their system over time. ZQRX uses science and data to substantiate growers efforts in areas such as reduction of carbon emissions, improvement of water quality, working conditions, animal welfare and wellbeing standards.”

How has your partnership with Reda developed through the years?

“Reda is an incredibly important partner, not only for NZM, but also to all the growers that supply them. When we partner with brands and supply chains, we tend to partner with those that share a very deep philosophical alignment to us.  That alignment is very much around relationships, trust, integrity, sustainability and doing what is right, not only for consumers but also for growers. This is something that is very true with Reda and it’s very true with us, so it was a natural fit. [..] Our businesses share very similar DNA with regards to what makes us special. The people, the partnership, trust, integrity and continuous striving for innovation, quality and for doing what is right for the planet and for the people.”

What is the The New Zealand Merino Company’s relationship with Growers?

“NZM has a deep relationship with growers, representing approximately 75% of the Merino wool produced in NZ, these relationships go back in many cases two and a half decades. We have a team of Area Managers that work with growers directly, we feel part of the same team [..] this is a very unique proposition for a supply chain or for a brand, in that it enables communication directly to the growers that are supplying the fibre. [..]”

What will be the next innovation in the wool world that will provide further sustainability improvements?

“I think the next innovation that will drive sustainability will be the concept of hyper-transparency and developing tools that we can give consumers and brands absolute visibility and clarity about exactly where the wool comes from, and also how the wool is produced. [..] I think it is hugely exciting and enables consumers to become a lot more involved in the value chain of the products that they purchase and in so doing they will be able to make far more responsible and sustainable choices about what they purchase and start to see best practice to be applied through the supply chain as well.”

How can a fashion brand start its own journey into sustainability with NZ Merino?

“First of all asking questions about their value chain. Do they know where their raw materials come from? Do they know who the suppliers are? Do they have visibility and transparency of their pipeline?”

“In most cases they probably won’t. My recommendation is to partner with a supply chain partner that they trust.[..]”

What are your thoughts about Rewoolution?

“Rewoolution as a brand has always been part of the ZQ program. All the wool that is part of Rewoolution is ZQ certified, so comes from farmers that belong to the world best standards and are also part of the ZQRX platform. For me, Rewoolution represents a leadership position, being a leader is always very challenging, but Rewoolution is providing I guess a blue print for many others to leverage and also something to learn from.”

Do you believe that there is an increased awareness for customers on the clothes they wear?

“We see significant consumer demand towards a greater understanding of the impact that the fashion industry, has on the planet. [..] The curiosity that has been demonstrated by consumers is only going to grow and for me that’s the huge opportunity and something that is extremely important because consumers are the ones to drive positive change for the fashion industry globally. They are the ones to hold brands to account, requiring brands to use more sustainable materials and asking for best practice to be applied on the farmers that produce the wool, and on the supply chain who convert those fibres into ethical products.”

Autumn has arrived: cooler temperatures and splendid colours in the forests remind us of one thing: the best season for mountain biking has begun! Whether you prefer long, technical climbs or beautiful, peaceful descents, we have selected some routes along the slopes of Monte Bondone that might be just right for you. Its location will give you the opportunity to stay close to Trento, without having to drive for too many hours, but above all it will allow you to admire some of the most beautiful views in the region thanks to its rich network of trails.

Towards Malga Malghet

Departing from Cadine, this route will allow you to discover all the beauties of this mountain on the side facing Trento and to admire, of course, the magnificent views of the Adige Valley. The length is 29.92 km, while the difference in altitude is 1200m, so if you are not very fit we recommend an e-bike. From the centre of the village, take the via del Capitello and then continue on the SP85 towards Sopramonte and then follow a new path towards the Santuario di S.Anna. After many kilometres and a lot of effort you will arrive at Viote, where you will find the signs for Malga Malghet.

From Vason to Viote

With a spectacular view of the Dolomites, this ring-route will not only train you, but also provide you with excellent views and interesting spots for small breaks and picnics. It is 16.1 km long with a difference in altitude of 350 m, so we recommend it also to families. Starting from Vason, head towards the Viote, a small natural plateau where you can also find a small biotope with many animals. Once you have arrived, follow the signs for the “Giro delle Viote”, which will allow you to walk along the entire path without having to worry particularly about getting lost or making a wrong turn.

Side Trail Trento - Monte Bondone

For more “extreme” mountain biking, we have selected this trail that starts right at the base of the mountain. The Side Trail Trento is the most complete way to discover this mountain. Starting from Ponte S. Lorenzo, in Trento, the length of this trail is remarkable: 42 km, while the positive height difference is 1530m. The indications to follow are also very simple, from the start you will find indications towards Malga Brig and once you are there you can continue towards Viote, after a lot of effort and ascent, you will find again a ring path that will bring you back to the valley passing by Malga Albi and the village of Aldeno, with a wonderful view on the whole valley.

Whether you are trained or not, this mountain is full of novelties and new trails that are gradually being prepared and renewed to provide fun for both experts and families with a desire for adventure.

It’s a special day and, with the right company, I’m ready to takle the Alta Via of Fundres, a spectacular itinerary, surrounded by the unspoiled nature of the Dolomites, which starts from Vipiteno in the Alta Valle Isarco and leads nearby Brunico in Val Pusteria, in the heart of Dolomites.

Discovering the Alta via of Fundres

Six stages for many but not for all

This route is divided in six stages (one per day) and requires both good physical preparation and the right clothing to face the most technical sections. If you decide to trek the Alta Via with your family, it is recommended that children are at least 15/17 years old and trained to face the mountains. Every day, in fact, you walk at an average altitude of 2000 meters for at least seven hours, for a total of 70 kilometers and 5600 meters of elevation gain, following the route circled in red.

From Vipiteno to adventure

The first part starts from Vipiteno and reaches the Simile Mountain hut (about seven hours): on the path it is not rare to come across small bushes of strawberries that can cheer the walk. Fast and safe we reach the Simile hut and then we took the path which will lead us to the Bressanone Refuge. We proceed along the path while exploring the surroundings. We believe in the importance of exploring because it allows us to live new and exciting experiences: the most important thing is respecting the customs of the places and the people you meet along the way.

Breath, observe, breath

The following morning, after a rich breakfast, we set off again, full of energy. Along the way we see some groundhogs and shortly after I’m the first noticing an eagle dancing above our heads. In about six hours we reach the Walter-Benninger bivouac, which provides shelter for eight people. Here, we prepare a delicious home-made fondue since the shelter doesn’t provide guests with food, and after a quick chat we slip into our sleeping bags. The following day, we face the path which leads us to Ponte Ghiaccio refuge, and this is the part that most impressed me: you walk along a small stream and then, following the thinning of the vegetation, you find yourself facing an increasingly steep and rocky slope. I take a few seconds to observe the green expanses we have just crossed. I breathe and try to live this unique moment to the fullest.

Ponte di Ghiaccio refuge, a compelling stop

The Ponte di Ghiaccio refuge (2545 meters above sea level) is a minimal structure, buildt using functional materials and in a way to be energy self-sufficient. This is the point where the ascents to many peaks start: the Gran Pilastro, the Grande Mesule or Punta Bianca. The refuge is located on the stretch that connects Lappago with the Fundres Valley and from here you can also see the enchanting Lake Neves. Just enough time to drink a welcome mountain “drink” and we go out again near the refuge to admire a big and beautiful red Moon.

Make the most of the mornings

The next morning, we wake up early, as we have to face at seven to eight hours of walking. Our destination is the Lago Pausa Refuge, near to the homonymous lake, and considered by many people the most evocative stretch of the entire Alta Via: the difference in altitude is challenging (about 1100m) but the view is wonderful, and it is easy to meet ibex, deer and chamois. The last stretch extends from the Lago Pausa Refuge to San Giorgio, in Valle Aurina di Tures and this part of the trail offers unforgettable views too, such as the one on Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

It’s night, we hear footsteps. In the dark on these peaks there are only a few of us. With the dim light of the lantern we can’t see much, but we hear everything. We begin to perceive a laboured breathing, but not exhausted.

TORX started a few days ago and the Tor des Géants – TOR330 we could say a few hours ago but, looking at the clock, we realize that it is now almost two days, 42 hours to be exact. We see him running up along the trail: Jonas Russi is in the lead. He is running in record time.
He has a big gap, about half an hour. In second place is Franco Collé, but he is suffering, a volunteer tells us in advance. At the last assistant point he said: “A bad night, I don’t eat and I have to try to limit the damage”, the stomach problems have put him in crisis. So all we can do is wait, hoping that the situation has improved, until we see him arrive with the expected detachment and visibly dejected. But Collé does not give up, he does not stop running. Step by step he advances.

The race is still long and Jonas Russi knows it: “I saw him in difficulty, I’m fine even if I’m a bit tired, Franco has been struggling for 50 kilometres, but I’m waiting for him to come back”. The last word is not yet said.

The sun arrived and finally warmed the spirits of these athletes who, even for the second night since the start of the race, said no to sleep and continued undaunted to run. Along the climbs of Gressoney, amidst the shouts of the Val d’Aosta people and the scent of home, Collé was reborn and caught up again with the Swiss who had been alone in the lead for the whole of the previous day. They walked together for the rest of the day and night, one beside the other, maintaining a rhythm that increasingly made people shout: “A new record is coming”. But nothing is certain at the Tor des Géants, everything can change, especially on the last night.

Evening comes and darkness falls. “Will they arrive at the end together?” the public begins to ask. But something is changing. Franco Collé, after the bad times, seems to have a clear and precise intention: to increase. These two parallel lines, which seemed to have decided to stay that way, suddenly break up. Here comes the rain. It’s time to increase.

Jonas Russi silently took note of a race pace that he was no longer able to cope with and let Collé go, who retook the lead and had no intention of letting go. Little by little the pace of the race becomes impressive and the rumours, which before seemed an unrealistic anticipation, become more and more concrete. “I think we’re going to see a new record tonight,“ says one journalist, and we can only hope.

The public is anxious, nobody expected a pre-dawn arrival. Franco Collè emerged from the darkness, at the end of the fading lights of Courmayeur. It was 4.40am on Wednesday morning. He embraced his wife just before the finish line and they ran a few meters together.

A new record.

“I wanted to get to the finish line at all costs, I promised myself I would not give up despite the problems I had during the race, to redeem my retirement two years ago. I am happy with this record. I thank the public for their warmth. After two years there was a great desire for Tor,” he declared.

Russi, who had been exhausted by the race pace, was an hour and a half behind and would finish in 7:03.

Trekking e trail running sul monte Zugna

Much more than a mountain, Monte Zugna tells the story of the First World War with several war works still scattered along the paths. On its slopes there are fossil dinosaur footprints belonging to the Jurassic and not far from the hut there is the astronomical observatory. Mount Zugna is in short a special place where you can do trekking and trail running, but surrounded by memories of the past and the stars in the sky.

With a height of 1.865 m.s.l. and thanks to its botanical and faunistic aspects, Mount Zugna offers several possibilities both for trekking and trail running in the middle of nature, to discover the south of Trentino.

We’ve compiled a short list of trails that might be right for you should you consider a vacation near Trento, or even if you’re just passing through. For us, it deserves a stop. From the easiest to the most difficult, we believe that Monte Zugna offers trails for everyone.

The best known path is the one that starts from “Rifugio Monte Zugna”, reachable from Rovereto going towards Vallarsa-Vicenza, passing Albaredo and continuing towards the sign for the hut. You walk on a mule track, where once the mule caravans passed, and you reach a branch where you can see some ruins dating back to the First World War, such as a military hospital. Here you go up a path towards Monte Zugna on a gentle track until you reach the panoramic peak with a 40-minute walk from the hut. From here you can see all of Vallarsa up to the border with Veneto and also a large part of Vallagarina. The view is spectacular. We recommend this route for those who are new to trail running and would like to start training, but without overdoing it or risking injury.

For another path between history and nature, we suggest the excursion from Monte Zugna to Passo Buole, with a difference in altitude of 490 m and a length of about 5.7 km in each direction. It passes by the astronomical observatory, a small chapel and the Austrian defense line, dating back to the First World War. The starting point is the Monte Zugna hut and you continue along the forest road to the Parco della Pace. Then you go down on the path to the Passo della Portela that reaches the walls of the Coni Zugna. After two hours of walking we arrive at Passo Buole, our destination. With a continuous up and down this route is optimal for those who have been running for a few weeks and would like to try to do the first 10km with a good elevation gain and some technical points.

With its 8km and 970m of elevation gain, the path from Matassone to Monte Zugna is a route of medium difficulty. Breathtaking views await you at the top, and the entire trail is littered with Austrian and Italian trenches. The trail is 5.30h but you will never get bored! From the Piazzetta di Matassone, climb a rather steep path that leads to the Rifugio Monte Zugna. Continue on the Sentiero della Pace, passing by the astronomical observatory, until you reach a small church in memory of the fallen during the war. Here you turn towards the Parco della Pace (Peace Park) and continue between the white glow of the white fortress and that of the trenches. This path is great for vertical enthusiasts who want to train on steep climbs, but without exaggerating, thanks to the flatter points that occur in various sections of the mountain.

The last path that we propose is for those who love long distances and maybe are considering preparing a race. It is a ring route that starts in Ala and arrives on Monte Zugna. It is 34.9 km long and has a difference in altitude of 1,539 m. From Ala you go in the direction of Passo Buole with medium difficulty. From the start, there is a 14 km long, demanding climb to the house of the Alpini of Ala, the Rifugio Sartori. From here you take the dirt road that you will find on the right and, after the initial effort, it is all, in part, downhill. This is a longer route than the others, but it allows a complete tour of the mountain and above all to train for a longer and more complex distance.
